Bill Hassell was born in Western Australian and apart from a period as a student overseas and later working overseas has lived his life in the State.

He is a lawyer by profession and was a partner in an old firm which was later absorbed into one of the larger national firms.

In the 1970s he became the State Member for Cottesloe in the Western Australian Parliament, subsequently a Minister of the Crown in the governments of Sir Charles Court and Hon Ray O’Connor, then Deputy Leader and Leader of the Opposition in the 1980s.

He held innumerable positions in the Liberal Party starting with the University of Western Australia Liberal Club in 1961; he was State President of the Party in the mid 1990s during which term the government of Hon Richard Court was elected to office. He is a Life Member of the Party.

He became the Western Australian Agent General in Britain and Europe from 1994 to 1997.

Since resigning from Parliament in 1990 he has been engaged in many business, public service and charitable roles.

Latterly, he has been a Councillor and Deputy Mayor of the City of Nedlands.

His work has been recognised by several honours including the Order of Australia and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Bill has been married to Susan for 42 years and they have three adult children and four grandchildren.
