Crime Deterrent Tips


  • Ensure your home always looks occupied
  • Don't hide keys to your home or cars anywhere outside
  • Lock doors and windows, even when you are home
  • Engrave and photograph your valuables
  • Record serial numbers
  • Use alarm systems and motion activated lighting to deter intruders
  • Trim plants around your home where an intruder could hide
  • Keep wallets and handbags away from windows and doors
  • Call Police if you witness any suspicious activity on 131444 – Police cannot respond if they are unaware.

Going on Holiday

  • Mow the lawn and if the holiday in lengthy arrange for a second mow to happen.
  • Cancel deliveries. Particularly newspapers, and arrange for regular check to occur.
  • Arrange mail collection.
  • Hide or leave with someone, a spare set of keys.
  • Take a spare set of keys with you.

Check Lists

  • Check all the windows and doors are locked.
  • Disconnect all unessential power and lighting outlets.
  • Turn off appliances.
  • Disconnect your answering machine.
  • Install timers for T.V. and principle lights to come on and off to a plan.
  • Put a car in carport, lock garage.

Neighbourhood Watch

  • Ask trustworthy neighbour to keep an eye on the property. Give them a number to call in emergencies.
  • Arrange for a neighbour to put out your rubbish bins take in after being emptied.
  • Arrange with neighbour to blow leaves away from doorways, garages etc.
  • Give your neighbour telephone number (131444) for police.

Alarm Monitoring

  • Just before you leave, spray around detectors and main rooms to kill bugs; they reproduce every 2/3 weeks and set off alarms. An alarm sounding for 10 minutes is a "give away" that no one is home.
  • If monitored, advise you alarm company.
  • If not monitored arrange with a trustworthy neighbour to manage your alarm. Provide them with a key and code.
