Seed of an idea as new park germinates from St Johns Wood

Part of the old Swanbourne Hospital site is set to get a new lease of life with a modern park proposed for the area.

Undeveloped public open space west of the site on St Johns Wood Boulevard, Mt Claremont, is being transformed by the City of Nedlands in partnership with Aegis Aged Care.

Aegis Aged Care is currently developing the old Swanbourne Hospital site into an 80-resident aged care facility and the public open space was created as a result of subdividing the area.

The park will have facilities catering for a range of uses that focus on casual recreation – and the City of Nedlands wants your thoughts on the project, as well as the name of the park.

City of Nedlands staff will also be on-site from 2pm to 4pm, Tuesday, 15 May, to talk about the project.

Nedlands Mayor Max Hipkins said a draft concept plan had been developed, taking into account the natural and built environment, water quality and conservation, amenity, accessibility and potential community uses.

An art work is also planned for the park, in coordination with the playground.

“The project has been developed to align with similar sized parks while addressing current and future management of the area,” Mayor Hipkins said.

“It also aims to ensure community needs are met in the most economical way possible across the lifetime of the park.

“To do this, we wanted to ensure the community is fully engaged through our consultation process so they can express their thoughts and give feedback.

“This is an ideal opportunity to enhance this area of public open space to make it an attractive green area, integrating existing trees and new native plantings, as well as green turf and a playground area.”
