Swanbourne students lead recycling revolution

The City of Nedlands is engaging with the youngest generation to encourage residents to make recycling a way of life.

‘Recycle Right’ was the key message for Swanbourne Primary School students, engaging in a range of fun activities coordinated by the City’s Waste Minimisation Coordinator Chaminda Mendis.

Students from years 1 to 6 attended various recycling-themed workshops, learning how to reduce waste and form positive habits around recycling practices.

Swanbourne Primary School teacher, Linda Scott, said taking part in short, interactive sessions gives students the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of effective recycling and waste disposal methods.

“The students played a landfill simulation game, where they were asked to study a pile of rubbish, assess where each item should go and assign a label to it. 

“We then demonstrated how to correctly dispose of potentially dangerous items such as used household batteries, in order to look after the environment.” 

“Students also participated in a board game, based on snakes and ladders, that explained the workings of a worm farm,” Ms Holton said.

The City is keen to be involved with schoolchildren so they can pass the ‘reduce, re-use and recycle’ message to family and friends and encourage positive recycling behaviours at home.

City of Nedlands Mayor, Cilla de Lacy, says the City currently recycles 54 per cent of waste from landfill but is aiming for 65 per cent by 2030. 

“The City is a top performer amongst Western Australian local governments, with high diversion rates, low waste costs and strong customer service satisfaction levels and we want to maintain that position. 

“We offer second recycling bins to all residents, free of charge, but it is important that only recyclable items are placed inside the yellow-lidded bins.”

As part of its Waste-Wise Program, the City is presenting to primary schools throughout the City of Nedlands. Schools are encouraged to contact the City to book a waste education program.
