City of Nedlands community steps up to support Perth hospice

The City’s efforts to ensure effective community consultation was carried out on the proposed Perth Children’s Hospice has resulted in strong support for the concept and significant interest from local residents to join a Site Assessment Working Group.

In July 2020, following a public announcement that Allen Park, Swanbourne was the preferred location for the hospice, Nedlands City Council moved swiftly to ensure the community was properly consulted on the issue, and that the possibility of alternative locations was brought into the spotlight.

A community survey was undertaken by the City in September with a total of 113 local respondents providing feedback.  Overall results included 111 respondents supporting the project in principle and 92 supporting the project being located at Allen Park.

 Votes by location revealed:

  • City of Nedlands residents; 94.7 per cent in principle support, 57.9 percent supporting Allen Park as the preferred location.
  • Swanbourne residents (City of Nedlands and Town of Claremont); 89.7 per cent in principle support, 44.8 percent supporting Allen Park as the preferred location.
  • Swanbourne residents (City of Nedlands only); 91.7 per cent in principle support, 37.5 percent supporting Allen Park as the preferred location.

Expressions of Interest for the Site Assessment Working Group (SAWG) have also been impressive with 20 submissions received from Swanbourne residents.  The selection process has now taken place and successful candidates have been notified.

The role of the SAWG is to assist with the review of the proposed development of  the former Swanbourne Bowling Club in Allen Park which has been recommended as a site for the first Perth Children’s Hospice in Western Australia, and helping to ensure that the proposed development considers and responds to key matters of importance to the local community.
