Roland Leach Poetry Prize 

The City of Nedlands Roland Leach Poetry Prize is a biennial poetry competition, which aims to promote poetry in the community and to recognise and reward outstanding, original works of poetry written by children and young adults in Western Australia.

Entries are judged in the following categories:

  • A: Middle primary (Years 3 and 4)
  • B: Upper primary (Years 5 and 6)
  • C: Lower secondary (Years 7, 8 and 9)
  • D: Upper secondary (Years 10, 11 and 12)

Conditions of Entry

The Roland Leach Poetry Prize is open to young poets who reside in Western Australia.

  1. Original entries in English can be submitted electronically or in hard copy.
  2. Name and address of entrant is to be written on the entry form only.
  3. Entries must be submitted in A4 portrait format only.
  4. Entries must be unpublished and original work of the entrant.
  5. Entrants must verify age and declare the poem is their own work and that they have approval from their parent/guardian or teacher to enter.
  6. Entries must not have won any previous competitions.
  7. Entries must be anonymous for judging purposes.
  8. An email address must be provided on the entry form.
  9. If entering more than one poem, each poem needs to be submitted separately with its own entry form.
  10. Joint entries are not accepted.
  11. The judges’ decision is final.
  12. By entering this competition, you are agreeing to have your work published by City of Nedlands in their Newsletter and on their Webpage and in any anthology that may arise from the competition with acknowledgements to the author. Copyright will at all-time stay with the poet.
  13. Entries must be received at Nedlands Library no later than the advertised closing date.

Prizes are awarded for first, second and third in each category. The winners will receive book vouchers and be presented with a trophy and certificate. The Roland Leach Poetry Prize is presented to the poet with the most outstanding entry.

Award presentation ceremony
The award presentation ceremony will take place at the Mt Claremont Community Centre. Only finalists will be notified.

About our patron: Roland Leach
Roland Leach is an award-winning poet.
His five collections of poetry are:

  • Shorelines:Three Poets (Fremantle Arts Press)
  • Drowning ophelia (Sunline)
  • Darwin’s pistols & other poems (Picaro Press)
  • My Father’s Pigs (Picaro Press)
  • and the latest, Obliquity, published by Ginninderra Press.

He is the proprietor of Sunline Press, a publishing venture to publish Australian poets. He was the recipient of a Poetry Grant from the Australia Council where he travelled to Easter Island, Peru and the Galapagos Island.

He has won prestigious poetry prizes in Australia, including the 1995 Newcastle Poetry Prize, was runner-up the following year, as well as winning the 1998 Josephine Ulrick Poetry Prize and two Tom Collins Prizes. His poems, flash fiction and stories have appeared in literary magazines and journals in Australia, US, England and Ireland.
