The recruitment and selection process

The City is committed to ensuring that our recruitment and selection process is fair and equitable. We strive for all candidates to have a professional experience throughout the recruitment process. All applications received are confirmed with an acknowledgement email. Candidate information is treated in accordance with our confidentiality principles.

If you wish to apply for more than one position with the City, please submit a separate application for each position.

All applications should be received online via the City’s recruitment portal which can be accessed via the City of Nedlands website or will be linked directly into City verified advertising.

Applications typically close at 5:00pm (AWST) on the closing date unless otherwise stated.  After this time, you will not be able to submit an application.

Application review and shortlisting

The most competitive candidates who demonstrate they meet the requirements of the role will be shortlisted for an interview. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted directly to organise a convenient time for an interview. Please note that our selection process may take some time after the closing date. If you need to check the progress of your application, please contact the Human Resources Department - however, please note that unsuccessful candidates will only be notified upon finalisation of the process. If you are shortlisted for an interview, we may request to see the original documents you cited in your application or certified true copies of the originals. If you do not have these documents at the interview and are offered the position, any formal offer will be pending validation of documentation.

Canvassing of elected members will eliminate you from this process.

On occasion, the City may progress and appoint a suitable candidate prior to the job closing, so it is recommended applicants submit their application as soon as possible with all of the required information.

Post interview requirements

Reference Checks

The City will contact your nominated referees at a suitable time. It is standard practice to contact at least 2 referees. We do require at least one of your referees to have directly supervised you in your previous employment for at least 12 months. We will ask your referees questions relating to your skills and experience, your employment history and suitability for the position you have applied for.

Pre-employment Medical Assessment

A pre-employment medical assessment is required for selected positions, particularly where there is a physical component to a role.  This assessment is at the City’s expense and is carried out by an independent medical practitioner. The assessment may include drug and alcohol screening, hearing tests and other relevant medical checks deemed necessary for the advertised position.

Working with Children Check

Candidates may be required to undertake a Working with Children Check depending on the role advertised. These roles include child-related employment (this information will be provided in the advertisement and position description). The candidate will bear costs of the check.

National Police Certificates

Candidates may be required to provide a valid National Police Certificate (i.e., a Certificate issued less than three months ago).

A national police certificate is a list of any criminal and traffic court outcomes and pending charges you may have and can be obtained via the below link. The candidate will bear the costs of the certificate.
