Tresillian Art Centre was abuzz with activity with more than 200 family, friends and supporters attending the City of Nedlands’ Emerge Youth Art Awards Exhibition on Saturday 23 July.

This popular annual Award attracted 126 outstanding entries this year, with the following winners chosen by judges Denise Pepper, Bernard Taylor and Jacqui Hills:

  • Open Award First Prize - Jessica Chen - for ‘Masked Painting’,
  • Open Award Commendation - Heather Bosch for ‘Sea Scroll’
  • Resident’s Award First Prize - Thalia Simpson for ‘Resting’
  • Resident’s Award Commendation - Aisling Sharkley for ‘Animal Studies II’
  • Under 18 Award - Beth Harries for ‘Music Teacher’.

In their comments to the winning artists, the judges were impressed by the overall quality of the works and offered encouragement to continue their artistic pursuits into the future.

For Jessica Chen’s work ‘Masked Painting’, the judges remarked on her ‘beautiful use and knowledge of colour and technique’ and on ‘capturing a sense of current times by including the mask in her self-portrait’.

Heather Bosch was unfortunately not present to receive her prize, but the judges were impressed by her clever use of a different medium, and her portrayal of a ‘disappearing’ sea.

Thalia Simpson’s work ‘Resting’ had the judges coming back several times to contemplate her technique and the painting’s sense of brooding emotion.

Aisling Sharkley, who was also a winner in the 2021 Emerge Youth Arts Awards, was commended by the judges for ‘capturing the delicate nature of the mouse’ depicted in her painting.

Beth Harries’ portrait ‘Music Teacher’ won the judges praise for its ‘masterful use of the medium including the skilful use of negative space’, noting that ‘learning to leave out aspects of a drawing is as important as what to include’.

All entries will be on exhibition until 19 August with visitors encouraged to vote for their favourite in the People’s Choice Award.  Tresillian Art Centre is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.
