The City of Nedlands' prestigious Emerge Youth Art Awards is back for 2024! The awards, open to Western Australian artists aged 12 to 25 years, showcases talent from budding artists across the region.

The exhibition will be on display at the Tresillian Arts Centre from 20 July – 16 August.

Conditions of Entry

  1. Limit of two entries (pieces) per entrant, works can be of different mediums.
    2. The artwork submitted must be original and have been completed after 31
    July 2023.
    3. No entry fees are required.
    4. All entries are eligible for the Open Award, and People’s Choice Award
    however only City of Nedlands residents are eligible for the Resident’s Award.
     (Proof of residency will be required from the winner.)
    5. Entrants must have been born between 12 July 1999 and 12 July 2012.
    6. Only entrants under the age of 18 years are eligible for the Under 18 Award.
    7. Entrants must have turned 18 and be under the age of 26 by the final
    submission date, Friday 12 July 2024.
    8. Proof of age will be required from all winners before collecting prizes.
    9. Entries can be framed or unframed. Unframed artworks will be mounted by a
    method of the curator’s choice.
    10. Artwork collection will be on Saturday 17 August 2024, 9am - 12pm. Any
    works submitted after the delivery deadline, Tuesday 16 July 2024, 7pm, will
    not be included in the exhibition.
    11. Work left uncollected after Friday 30 August 2024 will be disposed of.
    12. 2D work must not exceed 1m x 1m.
    13. 3D work must not exceed 60cm x 60cm x 60cm.
    14. Artworks that exceed the size requirements will not be accepted.
    15. All artworks must be dry/sprayed with fixative before drop off.
    16. Entries can be framed or unframed. Unframed artworks will be mounted by a
    method of the curator’s choice. Artworks must have appropriate hanging
    equipment, i.e. D rings, attached prior to drop off. All 2D artwork must be
    either framed or mounted with a backing board and matt, ready for hanging.
    Framed artworks should have suitable hanging devices (D rings with nylon
    poly cord). Please no sawtooth hangers. Unframed, mounted artworks will be
    hung with bull clips.
    17. Bowed or warped artwork (framing or stretcher bars) will not be accepted.

    19. Artwork must be labelled with artist’s name, name of the artwork, dimensions
    in cm, whether the artist is a Nedlands resident and the age of the artist at the
    time of submission, at time of artwork drop-off (labels provided at time of drop
    off.)
    20. All works must be deemed appropriate to be exhibited at a family exhibition.
    The organiser retains the right to deem any works unsuitable and therefore
    not eligible to be displayed.
    21. As exhibition space is limited, the organiser reserves the right to not display all
    entries.
    22. All decisions by judges of the awards are final.
    23. All due care will be taken with artworks. However, the City of Nedlands will not
    take responsibility for any damaged or stolen artwork.
    24.The City of Nedlands reserves the right to use photographs taken of entries,
    entrants and the opening event, for promotional purposes

2024 Judge's Profiles 

Stephanie Reisch 

Born in Belgium and based in Perth, Stephanie Reisch is an interdisciplinary artist, curator, freelance writer and arts educator. Her practice is concerned with the unseen and unknown aspects of the natural world explored through the lens of prehistory, alongside meditations on absence, animism and comparative time scales between humans and the cosmos. 

Stephanie holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons) and Master of Fine Arts from the University of Western Australia and is represented by Linton & Kay Galleries. Recent exhibitions include Dreamfeeder at Linton & Kay, Australian Ghosts at Lost Eden Creative, Raw Colour at Holmes á Court Gallery, Underland at Spectrum Project Space & Sculpture at Bathers 2022. Her work is held in private, corporate and public collections nationally including the Town of Victoria Park and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital Art Collection. 

David Ledger 

David Ledger is a West Australian artist specialising in oil painting. He completed a Bachelor of Fine Art at Curtin and studied classical drawing and painting at the Florence Classical Art Academy in Italy. He has exhibited in Australia and abroad including solo exhibitions in Perth and Hong Kong. His work utilises traditional media and techniques and he also has also completed multiple public artworks. A common thread in his work is related to ideas of place, where both material and metaphysical planes closely link and reflect one another. 

Kirsten Hocking 

Kirsten Hocking is an artist and educator, based in Perth (Boorloo), Western Australia. She paints richly detailed oil paintings of plants and animals across the genres of still life and landscape, using a combination of traditional and contemporary techniques. Kirsten holds a Bachelor of Contemporary Arts from ECU and a Graduate Diploma of Education from UWA. A former high school art teacher, she now teaches painting classes at Tresillian Arts Centre.  

Kirsten participates regularly in group exhibitions and has been the grateful recipient of numerous awards, including The Francesca Nelson Award (PLC, 2023), The People’s Choice Award (Claremont Art Awards, 2016) and the Louise Macfie Prize (Edith Cowan University, 2013).
