Magpie nesting season typically happens between August and November each year.
During nesting season magpies display protective behaviours, such as swooping, to guard their young.
The City of Nedlands encourages everyone to be aware of swooping magpies in the area, particularly in our bushland reserves.
Here are some tips to help reduce the impact of a swooping magpie while enjoying the great outdoors:
- Wear sunglasses and wide-brim hats
- Do not provoke magpies as they swoop to protect their young
- If riding a bike, dismount through nesting magpie territory
- If swooped, stay calm and walk away. Try to avoid running or looking toward the swooping bird
To report a swooping incident to the City of Nedlands, please phone 9273 3500 or submit an enquiry online to our Parks Team.
