City of Nedlands appoints two Freeman of the City
Two eminent City of Nedlands residents have officially been bestowed with the honorary status of Freeman of the City of Nedlands.
Christian Martineau and Christine Martineau were bestowed with the title at a formal ceremony at the Cottesloe Golf Club on the evening of Wednesday 22 November 2023.
The City of Nedlands Mayor, Fiona Argyle, said: “The City is proud to have officially recognised Christian and Christine Martineau for their contribution to our community, and to officially bestow the honorary title of Freeman of the City.
“I, myself am proud to be the person that initiated the nominations for our new Freemen. They are each outstanding individuals who have contributed so much for the betterment of the community.”
Mr and Mrs Martineau have served the community of the City of Nedlands, and the wider Perth community, for close to four decades. Their pride and joy, Martineau’s Patisserie, offered more than just baked goods – it served as a meeting place where the community could connect.
Martineau’s Patisserie opened in 1987 in the Captain Stirling Shopping Centre where it continued to operate until its recent closure.
“Martineau’s [Patisserie] has been the anchor of the Nedlands community. It was one of the few cafes that remained open throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and became somewhat of a community centre for many generations over many years.” Mayor Argyle said in her speech at the formal ceremony.
Mr and Mrs Martineau officially bring the City’s total number of Freeman to six, the maximum number of persons that may hold the honorary title at a given time.
The Martineau’s join the City’s current Freeman of the City; Ruth Reid OAM, Gordon Davies, Sue Morey OAM FRCNA, and Mary ‘Lennie’ McCall AM.
