Local Studies Collection

Nedlands Library Local Studies is dedicated to collecting and preserving the history and culture of the City of Nedlands. The collection spans Aboriginal heritage through to current events.

Our Collections
Nedlands Local Studies Collection comprises of books, photographs, oral histories, local newspapers, newsletters and memorabilia.
Some of our local history publications are available for loan, while others can only be accessed in the library under the supervision of the Local Studies Librarian. If the item you are looking for is not available for loan, please contact the Local Studies Librarian to make a viewing appointment.
As some items are rare or one-of-a-kind, if you have access to these items we request that you treat them with every respect and care.

Current Projects

Digitising Pictures of Nedlands
Picture Nedlands is our new online photograph database! You can now view photos of Nedland’s local faces, places and past events from anywhere, at any time!  Check out the Picture Nedlands Photograph Database now.

Nedlands Photographic Collection comprises thousands of photos and it may take the Library several years to make our entire collection available. If the photos you’re after aren’t online yet, please check the Library Catalogue or contact the Local Studies Librarian.

Oral Histories
Several ex-councillors, local celebrities and observant and insightful locals have recorded their memories of life in Nedlands spanning from the 1920s through to modern day. These interviews will soon be available for borrowing!

If you, or someone you know has fascinating stories to share, please fill out the Oral History Nomination Form. You will find the form in downloads at the bottom of this page.

Nedlands Local Studies holds talks and hosts guest speakers on topics of local historical interest throughout the year, particularly during the Heritage Festival during April/May and Family History Month in August.  Check out the Upcoming Events Calendar or grab a Nedlands Library Subjects of Note pamphlet to see what’s on in your Library this month.

Researching your Family History? 
The Western Australian Genealogical Society (WAGS) runs genealogical database workshops in the Library Training Room on the second Wednesday of every month.

Nedlands Local Studies also has two local history publications available for purchase:

  • 'Nedlands from Campsite to City' by A. E. Williams ($23.10) -A history of the City of Nedlands from the days Aborigines made their camps in the area to the time it was proclaimed as a City.
  • 'Asteroids on the Swan Vol 1 Nedlands Park the development of its Foreshore, Early Buildings and Owner's Lives' by M. R. Clarke ($16.45) - A collection of anecdotes from City of Nedlands Community and their children, along with photographs and maps.

Can you help?
Nedlands Local Studies welcomes donations of local photos, memoirs and memorabilia. Potential donations are individually assessed with regard to the value that they may add to the collection, as well as the Library’s current storage capacities.
We are also constantly looking out for skilled volunteers to help us with preservation and cataloguing projects.
