The City of Nedlands is proud of long-time local Scott Bailey for being awarded the Australia Day Community Citizen of the Year award. Scott's unwavering dedication and tireless efforts over the past five years to the Dalkeith Nedlands Junior Football Club (DNJFC) have transformed it into a thriving community hub and saved it from potential closure.
In 2019, with DNJFC facing the risk of closure due to dwindling membership, Scott took the initiative to revive the Club. As President, he successfully secured sponsorships from local businesses, including Ray White Dalkeith Claremont, Porsche Centre Perth, and Revo Fitness, ensuring the club's financial stability. Scott's leadership extended to all aspects of the club, from organising uniforms and marketing campaigns to training coaches, managers, and players. His efforts also included arranging sausage sizzles and securing media coverage to raise the Club's profile.
Scott's commitment to fostering community spirit is evident in his organisation of trips to Outback Wiluna, where DNJFC teams played against Aboriginal football teams and learned about Indigenous culture. In alternate years, he facilitated visits to Perth for Indigenous players and their families, arranging transportation, accommodation, and opportunities to watch games at Optus Stadium and participate in halftime matches.
Under Scott's guidance, the DNJFC has established a tradition of regular fun nights, featuring activities such as blow-up slides, castles, races, and tug-of-war games. These events have strengthened the bonds within the club and the broader community.
Beyond his contributions to the DNJFC, Scott has been an active participant in Hawaiian Ride for Youth, a 700-kilometre ride to Albany aimed at raising funds for youth suicide prevention. Over the past four years, he has dedicated countless hours to training and mentoring teenagers, further demonstrating his commitment to supporting young people. He said that the majority of funds raised for Ride for Youth go towards paying wages for Youth Focus Counsellors in schools.
"To ride my bike and raise money for kids mental health support at the same time is the least I can do to help our society," Scott said. Scott, aka Bails, is doing Ride for Youth again this year as part of Team Buswest (read more here).
Scott Bailey's contributions have helped revitalise the Dalkeith Nedlands Junior Football Club and also made a lasting impact on the community. His recognition as Community Citizen of the Year is a testament to his dedication, leadership, and generous community spirit.
