Artist Statement

A distinctive sculptural artwork, which contributes proudly to the civic identity of the district, embraced by the local community, and is a dynamic landmark point on the Nedlands map. A bold, simple and abstract sculpture becomes dramatic and animated by the movement of people and flow of vehicles around it. Vermey's sources of inspiration for this artwork include the landscape of the river setting and the yachting and nautical heritage of the region. Of great interest to the artist were the astronomical names given to Carnaby’s “Star Fleet” of early yachts, reflecting a pioneering attitude of discovery and expansion in the district at that time.

Artwork Description

This is a tall, iconic sculpture, of great visual distinction and presence, which endures over time and has acquired a special resonance as a landmark feature of this neighborhood. It features a large copper-coloured star form, 6 meters in the air symbolising both astronomical navigation and points on the compass. The naturally aged steel pole which holds the assembly, has a series of cables fixed between the base and the pole.
