The Wellness Machine

Artist's Statement

Created from the frame of the former Shenton Park Rehabilitation Hospital chapel, this piece draws inspiration from the hospital’s holistic approach to wellness. Connecting patients with sunlight, fresh air, nature and personal reflection was integral to their recovery, with many wards and gardens built around this philosophy.
Within this frame, the stories of the many lives touched by the hospital are told through the wellness Wi-Fi network. Relax, listen to the sounds of nature, and hear their tales.

Artwork Description

The Wellness Machine incorporates structural steel from the former non-denominational church building on the site, dichroic glass, incorporated as a wind vane, and stainless steel. The artwork also features a digital component, by media artist Sonia Hayes, which provides access to the history of this iconic site.
